The Season
What is Detty December?
Every December, Ghana becomes the centre of the diaspora's world. Detty December is the name Ghanaians and returning visitors have given to the festive season in Accra — a stretch of weeks packed with beach days, street festivals, all-night parties, concerts and family reunions. Flights fill up, hotels sell out months in advance, and the whole city hums with an energy you cannot find anywhere else.
The season peaks between mid-December and early January, when flagship events draw tens of thousands of visitors: massive Afrobeats concerts, day parties along Labone and Osu, raves, cultural showcases and pop-up markets. The year's biggest names in African music play Accra in December — there is simply no other month like it.
The Table
Eat like family: the food of the season
Detty December is as much about the table as it is about the turn-up. Ghanaian cuisine is built for celebration — hearty, generous, and best shared family-style. These are the dishes you cannot leave Accra without tasting:
- Fufu and Light Soup — the national comfort dish. Pounded cassava and plantain, served in a fragrant, tomato-and-pepper based soup with goat, chicken or fish. It is the dish that welcomes you home.
- Waakye — rice and beans slow-cooked with dried millet leaves, served with gari, spaghetti, boiled egg, shito (a fiery pepper sauce) and your choice of protein. Accra's most beloved breakfast and the fuel of every party morning.
- Jollof rice — Ghana's proud answer to the West African jollof debate, smoky and rich, crowned with grilled chicken or tilapia.
- Kelewele — spiced fried plantain with ginger, chilli and peanuts. The perfect late-night street snack between parties.
- Banku and tilapia — grilled whole tilapia with fermented corn dough and hot pepper sauce, an Accra evening classic.
The Plan
Planning your Detty December
Book early — everything. December flights, hotels and restaurants in Accra sell out well in advance. The most sought-after dining experiences are fully committed by November, and walk-ins during peak week can mean hours in line.
Pace yourself. The season runs roughly from December 15 through January 4. Build rest days around the big events, and balance late nights with proper meals — this is where a reserved table beats a queue every time.
Split your nights. Locals pace Detty December around daytime culture and nighttime energy: brunches and beach afternoons, then the concerts and raves after dark. Leave room for the small moments too — a naming ceremony, a shared platter, a toast with new friends.
Carry a little cash for street food and markets, but most venues take cards and Mobile Money (MoMo). And bring your appetite — Ghanaian hospitality is not optional.
